Women's Soccer: BIG EAST Honors Keane, Smith

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A pair of West Virginia women’s soccer players picked up BIG EAST weekly honors the conference announced today. Goalkeeper Sara Keane was tabbed BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and defender Mallory Smith was named to the weekly honor roll.
Keane, a Mt. Laurel, N.J., native, opened her career on the road at No. 10 Virginia, making three saves while facing 12 shots. She picked up her first career shutout in WVU’s home-opening win over Big Ten foe Purdue. Keane logged all 180 minutes while facing faced six corner kicks on the weekend.
Smith, a Hamden, Conn., native, was outstanding off the bench, logging 23 minutes against the Cavaliers and 25 minutes versus Purdue. She tied her career high with three points on one goal and one assist against the Boilermakers. Smith assisted on Blake Miller’s game-winning goal and helped the Mountaineer defense pick up its first shutout of the season.
The No. 13-ranked Mountaineers return to action this weekend at the 2011 Penn State Invitational. West Virginia will face tournament host Penn State on Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a match against George Mason on Aug. 28 at noon.
