MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 13-ranked West Virginia women’s soccer team opens its home season against Purdue on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and is a “Dollar Day” match, as all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each.
The Mountaineers are 1-1-0 all-time against Purdue. WVU posted a 1-0 victory at home in 2004 and fell 2-0 on the road in 2000. West Virginia has played a team from the Big Ten Conference in eight of the last nine seasons.
“Purdue is well-coached and is coming off a shutout road win to open its season,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We are looking forward to a big crowd against an always tough Purdue team.”
The Mountaineers are coming off a 2-1 loss at No. 10 Virginia in their season opener, surrendering a goal in the 89th minute to the Cavaliers. Senior defender Erica Henderson scored off a header for the Mountaineers.
Purdue is led by Robert Klatte, the program’s only head coach. Klatte has guided the Boilermakers to six NCAA tournament appearances and 10 consecutive seasons with 10-plus victories from 2000-09.
The Boilermakers return nine starters from 2010, five of whom are seniors, to go along with 13 newcomers. They are led by Lauren Montenegro who has started every match the last three seasons, looking to become the program’s first four-time all-Big Ten selection.
Senior Brookley Rogers anchors the Purdue defense as its center back, logging every minute of every game last season. Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Clara Kridler made eight saves in Purdue’s 1-0 season-opening win over Toledo.
Fans unable to attend tomorrow’s match can follow the Mountaineers at home all season long via GameTracker and a free WebStream at MSNsportsNET.com.
