Men's Basketball: Staff Reorganized

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University basketball coach Bob Huggins announced today that Billy Hahn has been named assistant to the head coach and Jerrod Calhoun has been named assistant basketball coach.

Hahn, a coaching veteran of 34 years, will enter his fifth season on the Mountaineer basketball staff after serving as an assistant coach for the previous four seasons.

“At this juncture where the program is with nine new guys, we felt with my schedule and as much time I spend out of the office recruiting and with speaking engagements, that we needed someone who has sat in the head coaching chair, particularly with the amount of new guys we have,” says Huggins. “Obviously, Billy’s experience gives us that person to serve as my aide in administrative matters and with the overall day-to-day operations of Mountaineer basketball.”

Hahn, who came to West Virginia in 2007, spent the majority of his coaching career at Maryland, where he was an assistant to Gary Williams for 12 seasons from 1989-2001. Hahn was promoted to associate head coach at Maryland in 1997.

Hahn began his coaching career in 1975 as an assistant coach at Morris Harvey College. He then served as an assistant coach at Davidson for one year before moving on to serve as an assistant coach at Rhode Island from 1977-80.

In 1980, Hahn began a six-year stint as an assistant coach at Ohio University and was named head coach in 1986 for three years. After serving as an assistant at Maryland, Hahn served as head men’s basketball coach at La Salle for three years from 2001-04. He also has been a director of the Hoop Group, a New Jersey-based recruiting and camp service, and also has served as a college basketball television analyst.

Calhoun, who has spent the last four seasons as director of basketball operations at WVU, will assume his new position on July 1.

“This change certainly opens up tremendous opportunities for Jerrod and one he will take full advantage of,” says Huggins. “We look forward to his exuberance in terms of recruiting.”

Calhoun came to West Virginia in 2007 from Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio, where he spent three seasons as assistant basketball coach. Walsh posted an 82-21 record during his three seasons there, including the 2005 NAIA national championship, 2006 NAIA Elite Eight and 2007 NAIA Sweet 16.

The Cleveland, Ohio, native began his coaching career at Cincinnati in 2003-04, where he served as a student assistant under Huggins. That year, the Bearcats went 25-7 overall and advanced to the second round of the 2004 NCAA tournament.

Calhoun played two years of college basketball at Cleveland State for Rollie Massimino. While at CSU, he was a member of the Dean’s List as well as the Student-Athlete Advisory Board.

Calhoun attended Villa Angela-St. Joseph High in Cleveland, earning four basketball letters and was team captain his senior year. He averaged 19.0 points per game his senior year and graduated as the school record holder for free throw percentage. Calhoun also was tabbed Lake County News Herald Player of the Year.

Calhoun coached AAU basketball for three years in the Cleveland Basketball Club and worked the USA Developmental Festival in Colorado Springs in 2001. He also has served as a coach and counselor at the Rollie Massimino basketball camp, Five-Star basketball camp, Walsh University basketball camp and the Bob Huggins basketball camp.

Calhoun graduated in 2004 from Cincinnati with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in communications. He has a son, Jordan, and married the former Sarah McKenna in May 2011.
