MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Strength and Conditioning Mike Joseph has announced the hiring of Brian Whiting as strength and conditioning coach on the Mountaineer staff.
Whiting will handle the strength and conditioning responsibilities of the women’s basketball and women’s tennis teams at WVU.
“Brian is a great addition to our staff,” says Joseph. “As a young coach, he will bring a lot of energy to our staff and athletic teams. He brings a lot of division I experience in terms of working with the men’s basketball team and other olympic sports at Michigan State and that will be useful in helping our women’s basketball and women’s tennis teams be very successful.”
“I would like to thank Mike Joseph for the opportunity to be a part of the West Virginia strength and conditioning staff, the university and athletics as a whole,” says Whiting. “I am very excited to start working with the women’s basketball and tennis programs. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to train both teams physically and mentally to get them ready to compete.”
He comes to West Virginia after a three-year stint at Michigan State, where he worked his way from a volunteer intern to a graduate assistant with experience in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s ice hockey, men’s soccer, baseball and wrestling, in addition to various other varsity sport teams.
A native of Plymouth, Mich., Whiting has experience in the classroom as an instructor and also as a personal trainer. He is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a certified USAW Sports Performance Coach.
Whiting is a 2009 graduate of Michigan State with a bachelor’s of science degree in kinesiology and holds a master’s degree in coaching cognate, also from Michigan State.
