Baseball: Summer Update #2

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Throughout the summer, MSNsportsNET.com will bring fans weekly updates of current Mountaineers competing in the numerous summer baseball leagues around the country. Fans can also access information on former Mountaineers playing in Major League Baseball and its minor league affiliates.
Summer Collegiate League
Outfielder Chris Rasky (Butler BlueSox – Prospect League) has played in 17 games and currently has a .218 batting average with six runs, 12 hits, four doubles and six RBIs. Last week, Rasky batted 4-for-17 (.235) with one run, one double and two RBIs.
Outfielder Tyler Steele-Worsham (Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts – Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League) has played in eight games with one run, four hits and four RBIs. Last week, Steele-Worsham batted 2-for-10 (.200) with two RBIs.
Pitcher Zach Bargeron and first baseman L.K. Thompson are playing for the Monmouth Monarchs of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League. Bargeron has played in four games, pitching 4.2 innings and allowing no runs on three hits. He has also struck out eight batters. Thompson has played in nine games with two runs, eight hits, one double and four RBIs.
Pitcher Jared Hill (Grand Lake Mariners – Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) has seen action in four games, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
Pitcher Ryan Tezak (Forest City Owls – Coastal Plain League) has pitched in six games and nine innings, allowing three hits, two runs and has struck out nine.
Jonathan Jones (Strasburg Express), T.J. Kuban (New Market Rebels), Ryan McBroom (Haymarket Senators) and Brady Wilson (Winchester Royals) are all playing in the Valley Baseball League.
Jones has a record of 2-0 with a 2.49 earned-run average in four starts. In 21.2 innings pitched, Jones has allowed 13 hits and six runs, striking out 19. Jones earned a win last week, pitching six innings and allowing one run on three hits.
Kuban currently has a .240 batting average in 20 games with one home run, 14 RBIs, 12 runs and six doubles. Last week, Kuban batted 4-for-24 (.167) with three runs, one double and one RBI.
McBroom has a batting average of .246 in 15 games with 15 runs, three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs. In action last week, McBroom was 7-for-20 (.350) with seven runs, two doubles, two home runs and seven RBIs.
Wilson is batting .281 in 20 games with 18 runs, three doubles, two triples, 12 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. Last week, Wilson went 10-for-23 (.435) with five runs, two doubles, two triples, five RBIs and seven stolen bases.
West Virginia in the Minors
Playing with the Lake Elsinore Storm (Class A Advanced) of the San Diego Padres organization, Jedd Gyorko is ranked either at the top or near the top of the league in every offensive category. In 74 games Gyorko has a .377 batting average with 73 runs, 118 hits, 35 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 70 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. The Morgantown native is second in the league in batting average, first in runs, first in hits, first in doubles, third in home runs and second in RBIs. In last week’s action, Gyorko batted 7-for-21 (.333) with five runs, four doubles, one home run and four RBIs.
Also in the Padres organization is infielder Vince Belnome, who is playing with the San Antonio Missions (Class AA). Belnome is in his third year of minor league ball and is currently batting .324 with 48 runs, 78 hits, 18 doubles, one triple, 14 home runs and 53 RBIs. Last week, Belnome batted 7-for-15 (.467) with three runs, two doubles, one home run and four RBIs.
After converting from catcher to pitcher, Morgantown native David Carpenter is playing for the Oklahoma City RedHawks (Class AAA) and is on the Houston Astros’ 40-man roster. Carpenter is 0-0 with eight saves in 18 games for the RedHawks, allowing 13 hits and no runs in 18 innings pitched. He has also has struck out 20 and walked six. Last week Carpenter made three appearances and pitched three innings, allowing one hit and earning three saves.
Infielder Tyler Kuhn is now playing for the Birmingham Barons (Class AA) of the Chicago White Sox organization and is batting .363 with 41 runs, 95 hits, 20 doubles, six triples, one home run, 44 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. Kuhn batted 5-for-17 (.294) last week with three runs, one double, one triple and four RBIs. Kuhn is leading the league in batting average and hits, as well as the team.
Former shortstop Grant Buckner began his professional career with the Bristol White Sox (Class A) of the Chicago White Sox organization last week. In six games, Buckner was 6-for-21 (.286) with four runs, one home runs and three RBIs.
Former catcher Tobias Streich is in his third minor league season and playing for the Beloit Snappers (Class A) of the Minnesota Twins. Streich is batting .216 with 16 runs, 21 hits, two doubles, one triple, two home runs and eight RBIs. In action last week, Streich went 4-for-12 (.333) with three runs, one double, one home run and one RBI.
Morgantown native Andy Altemus is currently pitching in extended spring training of the San Francisco Giants in Arizona.
