DES MOINES, Iowa – The West Virginia University women’s track team concluded the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 14 points for 20th place overall Saturday.
“One of the hardest jobs facing a track and field program is how to have your student-athletes mentally and physically prepared all fall, winter and spring,” coach Sean Cleary said. “This group has been training or competing since August.
“With that being said, I am ecstatic with this team’s commitment and chemistry and overall national class performances,” Cleary continued. “Two top 20 finishes in track and a national class cross country program speak volumes for our girls and my staff.”
Over the past year, the Mountaineer track program has had 13 all-American performances, eight BIG EAST Champions and a BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year award.
Cleary was named Mid-Atlantic Coach of the Year, while senior Chelsea Carrier earned Mid-Atlantic Women’s Field Athlete of the Year.
Academically, the cross country and track programs continue to excel with seniors Keri Bland and April Rotilio and junior Sarah-Anne Brault named to the Capital One Academic All-District First Team.
Seven student-athletes contributed to the 20th place showing, including Carrier (heptathlon and 100-meter hurdles), Bland (1,500-meter run), Meghan Mock (long jump), Kate Harrison (10,000-meter run), Brault (10,000-meter run), Katelyn Williams (high jump) and Rotilio (400-meter run).
