MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Rising West Virginia University junior Petra Zublasing won the Bronze medal in the women’s 10m air rifle and earned an Olympic quota at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Fort Benning World Cup, which ended yesterday, in Fort Benning, Ga.
The Appiano, Italy, native entered the finals tied for first place with a 399 (100-100-100-99) open relay score. Zublasing, a National Rifle Association (NRA) air rifle first team All-American, shot 102.8 in the finals for a total score of 501.8. She is the second Mountaineer to earn an Olympic quota place, as former teammate Nicco Campriani secured the first quota place among all sport events for the London 2012 Olympic Games with his first-place finish in the men’s 10m air rifle at the 50th ISSF World Championship on July 31, 2010.
Zublasing also finished 12th in the women’s 50m rifle 3 position with a final score of 581 (196 prone, 192 standing, 193 kneeling).
Campriani, a four-time NRA first team All-American, won the Silver medal in the men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 position.
The reigning world champion, Campriani, shooting for Italy, was narrowly defeated in air rifle by France’s Pierre Edmond Piasecki. After advancing to the finals with an open-relay best score of 599 (100-100-100-100-100-99), Campriani’s finals score of 101.8 put him in a first-place tie with Piasecki at 700.8. The duo had a one-shot shootout, and Piasecki edged Campriani, 10.1-10.0.
Campriani shot a total score of 1277.3 for his 3 position second-place finish. He tallied 1177 (392 prone, 391 standing, 394 kneeling) in the open relay and 100.3 in the finals.
Campriani also shot 591 (100-98-97-99-99-98) in the men’s 50m rifle prone.
Shooting for Great Britain, Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond had a strong showing in the men’s 50m rifle prone, finishing tied for 30th with a score of 593 (99-98-100-98-100-98). He also shot 1157 in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position competition.
Also of note, former Mountaineer Bryant Wallizer, competing for the United States, shot 596 (99-100-99-99-99-100) and finished ninth in the men’s 10m air rifle. A two-time NRA first team air rifle All-American, Wallizer just missed qualifying for the discipline finals, as he finished fourth in an eight-way shootout for the last three qualifications.
Next up on the world cup circuit is the ISSF Munich World Cup, to be held June 16-23, in Munich, Germany.
