MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team closed out its spring season with a 1-0 loss to Ohio State Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
“It was a good game today and we battled hard,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We had numerous chances but could not finish on any of those tries. Special teams finish their chances and that will be a focus of ours come this fall.”
The Mountaineers played well in the opening 30 minutes, keeping the ball in its offensive third for most of the half and hitting two crossbars.
In the ninth minute, midfielder Caroline Szwed cut a defender from the top of the box for WVU’s first opportunity of the match. Szwed blasted a shot towards the far corner of the goal with the Buckeye goalkeeper punching the ball over the goal.
“Both teams had their moments and we really came out sharp and ready from the opening whistle,” said Izzo-Brown. “We moved the ball well and came close on some scoring chances.”
Midfielder Bri Rodriguez found the crossbar in the 18th minute on a shot from the top of the box that dinged hard off the post.
Ohio State picked up its offensive pace late in the first half, leading to a throw-in deep in the corner. An OSU forward worked the end line and sent a ball into the middle where forward Tiffany Cameron netted the game-winner from 12 yards out.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, forward Blake Miller tried to put West Virginia on the board moments into the second half with a shot from 16 yards out, forcing a save from the Buckeye goalkeeper.
Cameron looked to double OSU’s score with a breakaway in the 53rd minute as goalkeeper Sara Keane came up with a brilliant denial, charging hard off her line to take the ball away from Cameron.
Rodriguez nearly connected on an equalizer at the 61:02 mark by beating a Buckeye defender and sending a shot just wide of the left post.
The Mountaineers attempted several shots late in the second half and generated three corner kicks in a 90-second span around 77th minute.
Today’s contest was the eighth and final match of the spring exhibition season for WVU. Each team was credited with four shots on-goal while West Virginia held a 10-2 corner kick advantage.
The Mountaineers graduated six seniors from their 2010 team, which posted a record of 18-5-1. The 2011 schedule will be released in the coming weeks.
