MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind freshman left-handed pitcher Harrison Musgrave’s three-hit complete game gem, the West Virginia University baseball team shutout Georgetown, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field in front of 689 fans.
“Wins are hard to come by in this league. Every team is good, they battle, they hit and they pitch,” Musgrave said. “Georgetown has a great pitching staff, we’ve score eight runs in two wins and the pitching has been great so far.”
Musgrave (3-2) pitched the full nine innings, earning his second complete game of the season and allowed just three hits and two walks, while striking out two.
“I don’t strike out many people anymore, high school I did, but now it’s all about pounding the zone and let the fielder’s do all the work for you,” Musgrave said.
WVU (19-14, 5-3) finished with four runs on 11 hits and committed one error, while Georgetown (18-15, 1-7) scored no runs on only three hits with one error.
“We want to enjoy this win for a few minutes before we worry about tomorrow, but all of the games are equally important whether it is game one, game two or game three,” coach Greg Van Zant said. “At the end of the season win you add up your wins, it doesn’t matter whether you won them in game three, game two or game one.”
Shortstop Grant Buckner led the Mountaineers offensively with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate, including a double, one run and one RBI. Rightfielder Brady Wilson and centerfielder Mark Dvoroznak each went 2-for-4, with Dvoroznak driving in one run. Designated hitter Jeremy Gum also recorded an RBI for the Mountaineers.
Justin Leeson, Mike Garza and Sean Lamont each had a hit for the Hoyas, while Will Harris (1-2) took the loss in 6.2 innings of working. Harris allowed two runs on nine hits, striking out four.
With two outs in the first inning, back-to-back-to-back singles from second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo, Buckner and Gum allowed WVU to take a 1-0 lead, with Gum’s hit driving in DiBartolomeo.
West Virginia added its second run in the bottom of the third when senior Justin McDavid hit a double to deep left field and was driven in by a Buckner single up the middle.
The Mountaineers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth when Buckner scored on an error by the shortstop, while Dvoroznak followed with a single to right field driving in left fielder Chris Rasky to bring the lead to 4-0.
The two squads will be back in action tomorrow at noon for the series finale. Senior Andy Berry (4-2) will get the start for the Mountaineers and Tommy Isaacs (1-1) will take the mound for the Hoyas.
