Baseball: Mountaineers Clash With Georgetown

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team will host Georgetown in its first BIG EAST home series this weekend at Hawley Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. on Friday, April 8, followed by a start time of 3 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday’s contest begins at noon.
Saturday’s game has also been designated as a “Dollar Day” with all tickets and select concessions costing just $1 each.
WVU (17-14, 3-3) was last in action on Tuesday afternoon in a 10-6 loss to ACC foe Maryland at Hawley Field. The Mountaineers scored six runs on seven hits, led by 2-for-4 batting performances by senior Justin McDavid and redshirt senior Jeremy Gum. West Virginia is batting .312 as a team with a pitching staff ERA of 5.73.
Gum currently leads the team with a .385 batting average and has scored 21 runs, while hitting 11 doubles, one triple, three home runs and driving in 21 runs. McDavid leads the team with 30 RBIs and is batting .315 with 22 runs scored, seven doubles, three triples and two home runs. Redshirt junior Dan DiBartolomeo leads the squad with 32 runs scored, while hitting four home runs and driving in 21 runs.
Redshirt freshman left-hander Marshall Thompson will get his first career weekend start for the Mountaineers on Friday. Thompson has had four starts and is 3-0 with an ERA of 4.81. He has struck out 19 in 24.1 innings of work and has an opponent batting average of .236.
The Hoyas (18-13, 1-5) opened the BIG EAST season taking one of three from Notre Dame, before getting swept by Cincinnati last weekend. Georgetown then defeated UMBC, 12-2 on Tuesday, followed by a 9-2 loss at Navy on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Rand Ravnaas is one of Georgetown’s top players, batting .379 with five home runs, 27 RBIs, 10 doubles and two triples. Redshirt sophomore Mike Garza is batting .352 with 31 runs, 11 doubles, three home runs and a team-high 30 RBIs. Senior Erick Fernandez has scored 19 runs on four home runs and has driven in 22 runs, while batting .340.
WVU has won seven of the past nine meetings against Georgetown, and is 28-29 versus the Hoyas in a series that began in 1902. Since BIG EAST play started, the Mountaineers are 26-9.
