Rowing: WVU Gets Time on the Water

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team’s race against George Washington and Georgetown, which was originally scheduled for today, in Washington, D.C., was canceled due to inclement weather conditions.
The three participating teams still held a competition, but official scoring was not kept due to the uneven racing conditions.
"We thank George Washington and Georgetown for hosting WVU, despite the troublesome conditions on the Potomac River,” says coach Jimmy King. “Although we did not have the chance to run official races, the trip was definitely worthwhile for our team."
Each crew, including WVU’s Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Second Varsity 4+, raced four five-minute pieces, giving every team the opportunity to work on various parts of a typical 2k race.
"Given the limited time we’ve had on the water in the past two weeks, today's format was amore beneficial to us than the planned 2k races,” adds King. “Instead of just twelve minutes of racing, our crews spent a total of twenty minutes at race pace, alongside rival crews."
The Mountaineers will continue racing on Sunday, May 1, as they travel to West Windsor, N.J., to compete at the 2011 BIG EAST Championship on Mercer Lake.
