MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia senior right-handed pitcher Andy Berry has been named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, while redshirt senior Grant Buckner earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference office announced today. Both were honored for their performances at Notre Dame last weekend.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Berry tossed his first career nine-inning complete game to lead the Mountaineers to an 8-1 victory yesterday. Berry allowed just three hits and one run, while striking out five. Berry threw 113 pitches in his first complete game of the season.
Berry joins freshman lefty Harrison Musgrave as a BIG EAST award winner, as Musgrave was the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week last week.
Buckner, a native of Elkview, W.Va., had his best performance on Sunday, finishing the game 3-for-5, including two runs, a double, a home run and three RBIs. Buckner completed the weekend batting 6-for-12 with four runs, two doubles, a home run and four RBIs.
In his career against Notre Dame, Buckner has batted 13-for-37 with 13 runs, three doubles, five home runs and 20 RBIs. Buckner currently is riding a 16-game hitting streak.
Through four weekends of play, Connecticut holds a two-game lead for first place in the BIG EAST, with Pittsburgh, WVU and St. John’s in a tie for second place.
