Baseball: WVU Travels to Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The West Virginia baseball team will travel to Louisville, Ky., to face No. 23-ranked Louisville from April 1-3 at Jim Patterson Stadium. Friday’s game will begin at 6 p.m., while first pitch for Saturday and Sunday is set for 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers, 16-11 on the season, hosted Morehead State in Charleston, W.Va., on Tuesday evening in the Mountaineer Diamond Classic at Appalachian Power Park. The Moun-taineers fell to the Eagles, 6-5, after Morehead State scored two runs in the eighth inning to win the game. Redshirt freshman left-hander Marshall Thompson started for WVU, allowing three runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched. Offensively, senior designated hitter Jeremy Gum batted 1-for-4 with a home run.
Gum leads the Mountaineers with a .378 bat¬ting average and 10 doubles. He also has one triple, three home runs and 20 RBIs. Sophomore outfielder Brady Wilson is batting .376 and has 23 runs scored, while driving in 19 RBIs. Senior Kevin Griffin (.375, 3 HR, 9 RBIs), redshirt junior Dan DiBartolomeo (.353, 4 HR, 20 RBIs), sopho¬more Chris Rasky (.324, 0 HR, 7 RBIs), senior Justin McDavid (.312, 1 HR, 25 RBIs), redshirt senior Grant Buckner (.307, 4 HR, 21 RBIs) and redshirt freshman T.J. Kuban (.300, 1 HR, 4 RBIs) are all hitting better than a .300 clip. As a team West Virginia is batting .321, with the pitchers recording a 5.64 ERA.
Junior southpaw Jonathan Jones will get the nod on Friday with a 2-3 record in six appear¬ances. Jones has a 6.25 ERA and has struck out 24, while walking 15. Opponents are hitting .296 off of him. Last weekend at USF, Jones allowed four earned runs on 10 hits in eight innings in a loss to the Bulls.
Saturday’s and Sunday’s starters are to be deter¬mined.
Out of the bullpen, freshman Ryan Tezak and redshirt senior Marcus Broadwater each have seven relief appearances. Tezak has allowed five runs in 9.2 innings of work, while Broadwater has allowed 12 earned runs in 13.2 innings. Tezak, Broadwater, freshman Josh Harlow and sopho¬more Michael Twigg have each recorded one save this season.
Louisville enters the game with a 16-8 mark, including a 8-5 home record. The Cardinals most re¬cently defeated Western Kentucky by a score of 3-1 on Tuesday evening. Louisville is hitting .255 as a team, while the pitching staff has compiled a 2.09 ERA.
Offensively, Drew Haynes leads the Cardinals with a .313 batting average. Haynes has 20 runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs. Stewart Ijames is batting .289 and leads the team with six home runs, while driving in 24 RBIs.
Sophomore right-handers Matt Koch, Justin Amlung and Mike Nastold will get the Friday, Saturday and Sunday starts, respectively, for Louisville. Koch is 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA with nine walks and 24 strikeouts. Amlung has a team-leading 0.65 ERA with a 5-0 record, walking 10 and striking out 30. Nastold is 2-2 with a 2.10 ERA and has struck out 19, while walking 14.
Tony Zych leads the bullpen with 11 appearances and has recorded a team-leading seven saves. Zych has a 0-1 record in 11.1 innings and has allowed three earned runs on 10 hits.
