MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Following successful high school and collegiate wrestling careers, former West Virginia grappler Kurt Brenner was inducted to the Southwest Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame on Sunday.
Announced at the 37th Annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic in Pittsburgh, Brenner joins former WVU great Vertus Jones (2006 inductee) to the elite group.
“It’s a tremendous honor for Kurt and a testament to how consistent his work ethic was through high school and college,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “He is a fine individual and it is a very fitting recognition for him.”
A 2009 graduate of WVU, the Freedom, Pa., native was a four-year starter (one of 13 all-time at WVU to accomplish the feat) and two-year captain for the Mountaineers. He compiled a 95-32 record with the team and was a four-time NCAA Tournament qualifier. He was also a three-time Eastern Wrestling League champion, becoming the fifth Mountaineer to achieve the mark since the inception of the EWL in 1978.
Before his time at WVU, Brenner was a three-time state champion at Freedom High, where he was a four-year starter and three-time captain. As the No. 1 recruit in the country at 171 pounds in 2004, he posted a 151-13 prep record and was a three-time WPIAL, Southwest region and PIAA champion. Brenner was also named a 2004 ASICS Tiger high school All-American and was named Pennsylvania’s Most Outstanding Wrestler the same year.
Among other achievements, Brenner was a runner-up at the 2004 NHSCA Senior Nationals, a 2003 junior national runner-up in freestyle and Greco-Roman and a 2002 cadet freestyle and Greco-Roman national champion. He was also an Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll member.
“There are few wrestlers from Pennsylvania who have claimed three individual state championships,” Turnbull says. “The southwest region of Pennsylvania is one of the toughest wrestling regions in the state and throughout the country, with the state itself being arguably the best in the country for wrestling.”
Other 2011 inductees to the Hall include Steven Snyder (1970, Claysburg-Kimmel HS), Keith Nellis (1973, Shaler HS) and Coleman Scott (2004, Waynesburg HS).
