Women's Tennis: WVU Falls to SC State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team (6-9, 3-3 BIG EAST) fell in a 0-7 match, today, to South Carolina State in Orangeburg, S.C.
“It was nice to be competing outside on spring break,” says coach Tina Samara. “The problem was that we’ve played a lot of indoor tennis, but haven’t played a dual match outside since last spring. Some things that we did well inside, didn‘t work so well outdoors.”
The Mountaineers’ No. 1 doubles pair of sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Mary Chupa won, 8-6, but the Bulldogs came back to take the doubles point with wins in the No. 2 and 3 spots.
“We had opportunities to win, but we have some of the same issues we’ve always had,” adds Samara. “We’re use to winning a lot free shots on our serves, and hits that would‘ve been winners indoors, didn‘t do much for us outdoors.”
The Bulldogs continued the lead in the singles competition, winning the point in each spot.
Mathis fought a tough first set in the No. 1 spot, but fell 6-4, 6-0, while junior Veronica Cardenas lost in two close sets in the No. 3 spot, falling 6-4, 6-5.
Sophomore Liv Pettersson also had a good showing in the No. 6 spot after a tiebreaker in the first set, but fell 7-6(5), 6-4.
“Everything is a little slower and things change when you compete outdoors,” concludes Samara. “We were in a different atmosphere and had rules that we weren’t used to, so we hope we can come back with a win tomorrow.”
The Mountaineers will continue action tomorrow, March 23, as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to compete against South Carolina Upstate at 2 p.m.
