Rowing: WVU Begins Spring Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team will begin its fall season on Saturday, March 19, as it travels to Raleigh, N.C. to go up against UNC and George Mason.
“Despite the lack of water time, we're eager to start the race season,” says coach Jimmy King. “Rather than dwell on what we haven't been able to do, we'll focus our energies on what we can do to achieve the best possible result on Saturday.”
Racing is set to begin at 9:15 a.m. with the Novice 4+ race, followed by the Novice 8+ at 9:30 a.m., the Second Varsity 8+ at 9:45 a.m., and the Varsity 8+ at 10 a.m. WVU will have one boat racing in each of the events.
“We're certainly stronger than we were a year ago at this time, heading into our spring break training camp,” adds King. “The majority of the rowers on the Varsity squad hit personal bests in recent tests, but we haven't been able to work on applying those in the boat. We’ll know by the end of camp if those gains made on land are transferring successfully to the water.”
In last year’s meetings with the Tarheels, the Mountaineers picked up three victories from their Varsity eight, Second varsity eight and Novice eight squads.
In WVU’s second-annual spring regatta on the Monongahela River, George Mason topped the Mountaineers by taking the lead in each race.
“We've had competitive races against both programs in past seasons,” King concludes. “This will be the first race of the spring for all of our teams, so we have no gauge for what to expect from one another.”
The racing will take place on Lake Wheeler.
