MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team continues its homestand with a three-game series against Rider this weekend at Hawley Field. First pitch is set for Saturday, March 12, at 1 p.m., and is scheduled to be a doubleheader, followed by a game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
“I know that they’re extremely well coached and they have excellent arms with some of the top pitchers in their conference,” coach Greg Van Zant said. “They’ve played a very difficult schedule at East Tennessee State and at Virginia. Barry Davis knows what he’s doing, I’ve known him for years and they’re going to be very good.”
The Mountaineers (5-6) are currently riding a two-game winning streak after sweeping Bryant in a doubleheader last Tuesday by scores of 7-6 and 6-1.
Outfielder Brady Wilson has continued to lead the team with a .378 batting average, while shortstop Grant Buckner and second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo each have 10 runs scored a piece. Buckner also leads the team in home runs (3) and RBIs (12).
The WVU pitching staff has lowered its ERA to 6.01 after Marshall Thompson and Corey Walter provided a combined 14 innings on no-run, five-hit ball in their career debuts against Bryant. Ryan Tezak came in and recorded his first career save in the first game against Bryant.
Expected to start the first game on Saturday is junior left-hander Jonathan Jones. The Fredericksburg, Va., native is 1-1 with a 6.35 ERA in three starts. Jones most recently pitched eight innings, allowing four runs and eight hits in a loss to Wright State.
The Broncs (4-4) are coming off a win against Lafayette on Wednesday, and are on a two-game winning streak. Rider earned a 7-4 win over East Tennessee State earlier in the season and also played a two-game series with No. 8 Virginia, losing both games.
Rider has a .210 team batting average, scores five runs a game and has a team ERA of 4.36. Only senior Steve Galella is batting over .300 with a .357 average, eight runs, three doubles, two home runs and 10 RBIs.
Senior left-hander Mike Thomas leads the starting pitchers with a 0.75 ERA in two starts with a 1-0 record. Junior left-hander Patrick Devlin is also 1-0 in two starts with a 2.25 ERA. Sophomore right-hander Chris Taylor leads the team with four relief appearances, totaling six innings pitched and an ERA of 3.00.
