MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomores Mandie Nugent and Jared Goldthorpe of the West Virginia men’s and women’s swimming teams have qualified for the 2011 NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships.
The women’s championships will be held from March 17-19, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas, while the men will compete from March 24-26, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
“Mandie has had a phenomenal year and had an excellent performance at the BIG EAST Championships,” coach Vic Riggs said. “She is looking forward to using her experience from last year’s NCAAs and is seeded in some very good heats. She has an excellent opportunity to get second swims.”
A native of Greater Manchester, England, Nugent will swim in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 500 free. Nugent is the 34th seed in the 100 fly (53.15), 16th seed in the 200 fly (1:56.64) and the 49th seed in the 500 free (4:45.11).
“Jared showed some great determination in making the men’s NCAA meet. Coming out of the BIG EAST Championships he knew he had a better 200 back in him,” Riggs said. “Having made the meet, he has a chance to go and compete against the best in our sport, which will only help him continue his progression towards his goals.”
Goldthorpe, a native of New South Wales, Australia, will swim in the 200 free, 500 free and 200 back. Goldthorpe is seeded 55th in the 200 free (1:38.21), 45th in the 500 free (4:23.42) and 13th in the 200 back (1:43.17).
