MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe and freshman Hope Sloanhoffer are the second Mountaineer duo of the season to be recognized by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) in the same week, as the pair was named the EAGL Specialist and Rookie of the Week, respectively, today.
The honor is the seventh this season for Sloanhoffer and her fourth rookie recognition. The Cornwall, N.Y., native has picked up at least one award each week this year, including three specialist honors, the most recent coming on Feb. 1. She is now one honor short of matching teammate Amy Bieski’s five rookie recognitions in 2008.
Sloanhoffer’s latest honor comes after scoring a career-best 9.95 on vault in the Mountaineers’ (6-3, 3-1 EAGL) second-place finish at then-No. 21 Penn State on Feb. 6. The league’s No. 1 vaulter, she anchored a WVU lineup that totaled a season-best 49.375 mark and saw three gymnasts score 9.9 or better. She is only the fifth Mountaineer gymnast to score 9.95 on vault since 2004.
Prior to her vault, Sloanhoffer scored 9.7 on floor and finished tied for seventh with the meet’s third-best score. She ended the meet on beam, where she finished second on the team, fifth overall, with a 9.75.
In addition to her league vault ranking, Sloanhoffer also ranks No. 3 on beam and No. 4 on floor. Nationally, she checks in at No. 24 on vault and No. 42 on floor.
Goldschrafe earns her first EAGL recognition of the season and career second. The Franklin Lakes, N.J., native was named the league’s rookie of the week on Feb. 22, 2010. Both honors followed meets at Penn State.
Goldschrafe put together her best all-around meet Sunday. The second gymnast to take the floor, she scored a season-high 9.775. The score withstood three additional rotations before she was crowned the meet’s outright champion. Following her floor routine, Goldschrafe vaulted second in the Mountaineers’ lineup and landed a near-stick for a career-best 9.8 score. She finished ninth overall with the meet’s fourth-best mark.
The Mountaineers stay on the road and travel to No. 15 Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 12, for a 4 p.m. meet at St. John Arena, in Columbus, Ohio.
