MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1 West Virginia rifle team suffered its first Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) loss of the season, falling 4696-4680, at No. 4 Kentucky, today, at Barker Hall, in Lexington, Ky.
Today’s victory gives the Wildcats (10-1, 6-0 GARC) the 2010-11 GARC regular-season crown, the team’s fourth title and first since 2009. The Mountaineers (9-2, 5-1 GARC) won the title last season.
UK earned victories in both guns, winning smallbore (2322-2320) and air rifle (2374-2360).
“We shot OK today. Kentucky just shot really well, and there’s nothing you can do about that,” says fifth-year coach Jon Hammond. “At the end of the day, both teams knew it was a big match, and there was more pressure on both squads, but UK was just a little better.
“We had some good scores across the board, but we just lacked that consistency from all of the shooters. We couldn’t maintain the high scores we had achieved in our last two matches.”
Senior Nicco Campriani finished first overall with a combined score of 1185. The Florence, Italy, native also shot 596 (99, 99, 100, 100, 99, 99) air rifle and 584 (198 prone, 192 standing, 199 kneeling) smallbore for the discipline wins. Campriani’s kneeling score matches a school record.
UK’s Henri Junghanel finished first for the Wildcats with an 1177 combined score.
Junghanel shot 595 air rifle and finished in second place. Mountaineer sophomore Petra Zublasing shot 594 and finished in a third-place tie. Junior Justin Pentz shot 588, the match’s sixth-best score, and finished in a tie for eighth place.
Pentz, a DuBois, Pa., native, shot 584 smallbore and tied UK’s Logan Fox for second place. Senior Kyle Smith finished fifth with a 581 score, while Zublasing shot 580 and finished in seventh place.
Today’s loss narrows the Mountaineers’ series advantage to 14-7.
The Mountaineers and Wildcats will meet again at the 2010-11 GARC Championship, held Feb. 26-27, in Oxford, Miss. Combined, the two teams have won three of the last four titles, with WVU capturing the 2010 crown and UK victorious in 2007 and 2009.
The Mountaineers return to Barker Hall tomorrow at 8 a.m. for a shoulder-to-shoulder match against No. 11 Columbus State.
