MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – For the fourth time this season, a pair of West Virginia gymnasts have been honored by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) simultaneously, as senior Amy Bieski was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week and freshman Hope Sloanhoffer earned EAGL Rookie of the Week honors, today.
The award, the ninth of her career, is the second straight for Bieski, a Nanticoke, Pa., native, and her third of the season.
Sloanhoffer, a Cornwall, N.Y., native, is honored for the eighth time this year. She previously earned four rookie of the week honors and three specialist awards. With today’s recognition, she has matched Bieski’s five rookie awards from 2008.
Bieski and Sloanhoffer are the only league gymnasts to earn multiple awards this season.
Bieski’s honor follows her all-around win with a career-best 39.325 score against No. 1 Florida, New Hampshire and George Washington on Feb. 20, at the WVU Coliseum. Bieski’s previous career-best mark of 39.275 had stood since March 15, 2008. Included in her day was a second place, 9.875 finish on bars; the mark also was a career high and bested her old mark of 9.825, a score she had attained once each season since 2008. Additionally, she scored 9.85 on vault and 9.825 on floor to finish fifth on each event with the meet’s third-best scores. She also finished sixth on beam with a 9.775 mark.
Bieski, ranked No. 21 nationally in the all-around, owns the league’s top spot with a 38.95 regional qualifying score. She also ranks nationally No. 24 on floor and No. 44 on vault, good enough for the league’s No. 4 and No. 3 rankings, respectively.
Sloanhoffer wins her fifth rookie honor on the strength of her clutch performance on Feb. 20, as she followed two falls on beam and anchored the Mountaineers’ lineup with a 9.85 score, the meet’s third best and good enough for fourth place overall. She then moved to floor, where she posted 9.85 and finished in a tie for third place with the meet’s second-best score. The league’s No. 1-ranked vaulter for the fifth straight week, she opened the meet with a 9.725 score on the apparatus.
Nationally, Sloanhoffer ranks No. 10 on beam, No. 17 on floor and No. 36 on vault. In addition to her EAGL vault ranking, she also ranks No. 1 on beam and No. 2 on floor.
Three Mountaineers have earned a league-best 12 weekly honors this season.
The duo helped the Mountaineers (8-5, 5-1 EAGL) score a season-best 195.225 and finish second to the Gators (196.875) last Sunday. WVU also picked up a pair of league victories over New Hampshire (194.4) and George Washington (193.05).
The Mountaineers play host to their second meet in six days when they welcome North Carolina, the reigning EAGL champion, to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Feb. 26, for a 7 p.m. meet. The team will don pink uniforms, and fans also are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
