MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia gymnastics team travels to a Big Ten arena for the second time in six days as it competes at No. 15 Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 4 p.m., at St. John Arena, in Columbus, Ohio.
The Mountaineers (6-3, 3-1 EAGL), 2-2 in dual meets this season, look for their second straight victory over the Buckeyes (3-2-1, 1-0-1 Big Ten), as they tallied a 195.65-192.8 win last season at the WVU Coliseum.
OSU owns a 14-11 all-time series advantage.
“There is not a let up for this team this year, but hopefully these road competitions against tough, skilled squads will pay off during the postseason,” says 37-year coach Linda Burdette-Good. “We practiced extremely well this week in the gym, and everyone stepped up and competed her routines strong. I told the team I wanted them to compete in tomorrow’s meet just as they compete in Cary Gym. Our competition routines don’t have to be personal bests each time. Each girl just has to compete like she does in practice.”
WVU enters tomorrow’s meet after scoring 194.05 and finishing second at No. 21 Penn State on Feb. 6. The Nittany Lions (195.55) scored the quad-meet victory, while WVU earned wins over Pitt (193.475) and Bridgeport (192.25). The team’s win over the Panthers was its second in as many weeks.
Included in the Mountaineers’ 2-1 showing in University Park, Pa., was a season-best 49.375 vault score, a mark propelled by three gymnasts scoring 9.9 or better. Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer led the pack and finished first overall with a career-best 9.95 score, while junior Tina Maloney and sophomore Alaska Richardson tied for second place with career-best scores of 9.9.
Despite hitting a season-best score, the Buckeyes lost, 196.375-195.575, in their last outing at No. 20 Denver on Feb. 4. OSU scored season bests on vault (49.275) and beam (49.15) in the defeat. The Buckeyes own a season average of 194.83.
Senior Amy Bieski broke into the Top 10 on the WVU all-time career points list on Feb. 6, as her 38.2 showing pushed her career point total to 1,706.4. She could potentially move up two spots tomorrow, as she needs 33.15 points to pass eighth-ranked Yvette Clark (1988-91).
Tomorrow’s meet features two decorated rookies, as Sloanhoffer and OSU freshman Sarah Miller have won a combined 10 conference honors. Sloanhoffer has earned the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week four times, including the Feb. 8 honor, and also has been named the league’s specialist of the week three times, while Miller was tabbed the Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times, most recently on Feb. 7.
Sloanhoffer paces the Mountaineers on vault, beam and floor and ranks No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the league on each event. Miller ranks No. 4 on floor in the Big Ten.
In addition to Sloanhoffer’s honor, sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe also was recognized as the EAGL Specialist of the Week. The Franklin Lakes, N.J., native is coming off a stellar meet at PSU in which she finished first on floor with a season-best 9.775 mark and scored a career-best 9.8 on vault.
Tomorrow’s meet will be a double-dual, as the No. 8 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team will compete against Brockport simultaneously.
