MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team opens its 2012 campaign with the first-ever Gold-Blue scrimmage at Pitt on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m., at Fitzgerald Field House.
Like past preseason intrasquads, typically held at the WVU Coliseum, the meet will provide the Mountaineers their only opportunity to compete their routines in front of a crowd prior to the start of the regular season.
Both teams’ lineups will feature eight competitors on all four events. While judges will flash a start value and award a score for each routine, a running tally will not be kept and a winning team will not be declared. Additionally, there will not be individual winners.
“This meet is all about working out the kinks,” says first-year Mountaineer coach Jason Butts. “The coaches are really looking forward to seeing this team compete in a competitive setting. We have had a fantastic preseason, and I’m anxious for this team to display all of its hard work.”
Tomorrow’s scrimmage is the only meeting between the East Atlantic Gymnastic League (EAGL) foes prior to the 2012 EAGL Championship. Pitt will play host to the league meet on Saturday, March 24, also at the Fitzgerald Field House.
“Tomorrow’s scrimmage is a new approach to preseason training for this team, and I’m glad we have the opportunity to visit Pitt’s venue before the postseason,” Butts says.
Seventeen Mountaineers will compete tomorrow, including nine letterwinners back from a 13-10 2011 season.
WVU opens its regular season and plays host to preseason-ranked No. 13 Penn State and Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m., at the Coliseum.
