MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s basketball team will host Elon at the Coliseum on Saturday, Dec. 31st in a 2 p.m. tip.
The contest marks the last non-conference match-up for the Mountaineers (9-3), who begin BIG EAST play at Connecticut on Jan. 4th.
It also marks the second meeting between the teams, with the first meeting taking place last year at the Alumni Gym/Koury Athletic Center in Elon. Behind four players in double figures, the Mountaineers defeated Elon in that game, 90-51, to take a 1-0 series lead.
Of those four players, current juniors Asya Bussie and Ayana Dunning each recorded 10 points, with Bussie adding 11 rebounds for a double-double.
The Phoenix (6-6) come into Morgantown having most recently defeated Wagner, 60-57, on Wednesday at the Marriott Cavalier Classic. A field goal from junior forward Kelsey Evans in the final minutes of the game pushed Elon to the win after Wagner was able to cut a 14-point deficit down to a one-point game.
Saturday’s game at the Coliseum will be the third game of the week for the Phoenix.
Junior guard Ali Ford leads Elon in scoring as she averages 15.8 points per game, and with 35.8 percent (39-of-109) shooting from beyond the arc leads the team in 3-point shooting as well.
Behind Ford, Evans averages 13.2 points per game as the team’s second-leading scorer, and paces the team in rebounding with 6.9 rebounds per game.
Senior guard Aiesha Harper rounds out the top three scorers as she averages 8.7 points per game.
The Mountaineers come into the game having last defeated Bucknell, 72-30, on Wednesday afternoon at the Coliseum to bring Coach Mike Carey to a milestone 500th career win.
Sophomore Taylor Palmer continues to lead West Virginia in scoring, as she averages 16.2 points per game and remains the team leader in threes made this season with 38. Against Bucknell, she had 13 points including three 3-pointers.
She’s followed by Bussie, who averages 12. 8 points per game and 2.2 blocks per game to lead the team in blocked shots with 26 on the season. She’s also second on the team in rebounding with an average of 6.5 rebounds per game.
Redshirt-sophomore Christal Caldwell rounds out the top three scorers, averaging 7.6 points per game for the Mountaineers. She put up nine points and pulled down four rebounds during Wednesday’s game against Bucknell.
Defensively, Dunning currently owns the fifth-highest rebounding average in the BIG EAST, at 8.0 rebounds per game. Against Bucknell, she led the team in both scoring and rebounding with 15 points and eight rebounds.
