QUEENS, N.Y. – After trailing the whole first set, the West Virginia University volleyball team used a kill from junior Anke de Jong to start a 7-0 run that ended with an ace from freshman Courtney Robison as the Mountaineers took the set and the match 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-26) against St. John’s this afternoon.
The Mountaineers (7-17, 5-8) claimed its first BIG EAST road trip win this season against the Red Storm (10-19, 1-11).
“This was a great win for our team because it was our first road win of the season,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We actually talked about that in the locker room and we tried some new things on the road to help them prepare. It helped a little bit but we also talked about having some pride on the road and getting it done. We came out and did a really good job with the offensive game plan and our middles did a great job with their blocking assignments too. What was great about this trip is that we have seen improvements from the beginning of the season till now but we also saw improvement while we traveled this weekend.”
WVU found itself in a hole after starting the first set down 7-1 to St. John’s. WVU used kills from de Jong and two service aces from senior Michelle Kopecky to close the gap. The Mountaineers slowly made their way back into the match before tying the score at 19-19 and going on a 6-0 run to take the first set 25-19.
Using the momentum from set one, WVU began set two with a 7-1 lead off kills from de Jong, Kopecky and senior middle blocker Abby Monson. The Red Storm attempted a comeback after three straight Mountaineer errors, but WVU would not let St. John’s close the gap as they took the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Keeping the momentum and energy on its side, WVU once again stormed out to a 9-1 lead to start the third set. The Mountaineers’ strong offense could not be stopped as the team hit .314 on its way to taking the third set and the match.
Kopecky led WVU with 12 kills, three service aces and eight digs while de Jong chipped in 11 kills and only one error for a .385 hitting percentage.
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend for their final BIG EAST match of the regular season and Senior Day against USF. WVU will take on the Bulls on Nov. 12 at 2 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
“We are looking forward to getting back into the gym and preparing for our closing match of the BIG EAST before post-season,” Kramer says. “Our seniors are definitely looking forward to playing their last regular season conference match in BIG EAST play and going out with a bang.”
