MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Connecticut 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 17-25, 18-25) tonight at Gampel Pavilion.
Despite registering more kills and digs then the Huskies (14-12, 4-7), the Mountaineers (6-17, 4-8) could not keep a consistent offense throughout the entire match.
“We came in today fired up, ready to battle and after losing the first set, we came out really strong in the second and showed a lot of fight,” coach Jill Kramer says. “There was a point in the third set where they started out-working us in transition and we gave up a few too many points and they took a lead and we couldn’t catch back up. In the fourth, we came out a little tentative and when you get into this part of the season, you can’t do that. You have to go after it. We are looking forward to getting back onto the court on Sunday with St. John’s and improving our game every day.”
The first set saw the score go back and forth as the teams would never let the other gain more than a two point advantage. Tied 23-23, Connecticut used two straight kills from Jordan Kirk and Mattison Quayle to take the first set and a 1-0 lead in the match.
With the score tied 6-6 in the second set, the Mountaineers used a kill from senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky to start a 3-0 run for WVU. The Mountaineers would not let the Huskies any closer as they extended the lead to nine before closing the set 25-16 with another kill from Kopecky.
Tied 1-1 in the match, the teams once again traded points at the beginning of set three before a 10-1 run by the Huskies gave Connecticut a 19-11 advantage. The Mountaineers fought to stay in the set but could not overcome the Huskies strong offense as it fell in the third set 25-17.
Connecticut used the momentum to take the fourth set and the match.
Junior outside hitter Anke de Jong led the Mountaineer offense with 15 kills while senior setter Kari Post and senior outside hitter Kylie Armbuster each recorded double-doubles. Post chipped in 40 assists and 12 digs while Armbruster finished with 14 kills and 13 digs.
WVU will continue BIG EAST play as it travels to St. John’s. The Mountaineers take on the Red Storm Nov. 6 at 2 p.m., at Carnesecca Arena.
