Gymnastics: Fall Intrasquad Ends in a Tie

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In an unusual twist, the West Virginia University gymnastics team saw its Turkey-Indian meet, the team’s annual fall intrasquad competition, end in a tie yesterday at Cary Gym.
The tie is the first in at least six seasons.
“I was extremely happy with how the team performed,” said first-year coach Jason Butts. “We had some great performances and also identified areas we need to improve. The purpose of this event each year is to figure out adjustments and fine-tune areas that need help so we can be ready for competition.
“What continues to impress me and is increasingly apparent in the gym each day is how cohesive this team is and how determined everyone is to make this a stand-out year. Our seniors – Tina Maloney and Nicole Roach – are doing an incredible job of keeping this team moving in the right direction.”
Butts and assistant coaches Travis Doak and Bridget Boyd noted that the team hit 24 routines.
Individual highlights included sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer hitting all four of her routines, while classmates Makenzie Bristol (floor), Bethany Yurko (vault) and Amanda Carpenter (beam) each stood out in one event.
Junior Kaylyn Millick had one of the strongest beam routines of the day, while freshmen Beth Deal and Dayah Haley made strong impressions in their first intrasquad, with Deal hitting her beam and vault, while Haley finished the day four-for-four.
“It was a great day in Cary Gym, and we appreciated all of the support we received from those that attended the meet, especially 2009 graduate Erica Watson Williams,” concluded Butts. “Erica was a great Mountaineer gymnast, and her enthusiasm yesterday was amazing.
“It’s always great to have alums and fans in the gym. Our practices are open to the public, and we invite supporters to stop by.”
The Mountaineers will take the following week off and will return to Cary Gym on Nov. 28. WVU will then travel to Pitt on Saturday, Dec. 10, for a preseason scrimmage against the Panthers at 4 p.m.
