MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The schedule for the fourth annual Big Ten-BIG EAST Baseball Challenge, hosted by the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, was announced by the conference offices.
The Mountaineers will open the tournament and play Northwestern on Friday, Feb. 17, at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla., at 10 a.m. West Virginia will then go head-to-head with Penn State at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. The team will finish the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 19, and face Michigan at 10 a.m., and Iowa at 1 p.m., both at Walter Fuller Complex in St. Petersburg, Fla.
"The Big Ten-BIG EAST Baseball Challenge is an outstanding event and a great way for us to open the 2012 season,” coach Greg Van Zant says. “We will play four quality Big Ten teams in excellent facilities with warm weather.”
It won’t be the first meeting between Van Zant’s Mountaineers and some of the Big Ten teams at the tournament. West Virginia played Iowa and Penn State at last year’s challenge, shutting out Iowa 5-0, and falling short to Penn State with a final score of 3-2.
The meetings between the two other teams on the schedule won’t be so familiar. West Virginia will play Northwestern for the first time since 1992, while it last played Michigan in 2004.
Bright House Field also is the scheduled location for the 2012 BIG EAST Baseball Championship in late May.
In addition to West Virginia, the teams participating in the challenge this February include Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, St. John’s and Seton Hall. Teams representing the Big Ten include Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue.
