Volleyball: Mountaineers Fall to Golden Eagles

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to BIG EAST opponent Marquette 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 15-25) this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers fall to 6-16, 4-7 on the season as the Golden Eagles improve their record to 20-6, 10-0 and stay undefeated in BIG EAST play.
The teams battled back and forth at the beginning of the first set before West Virginia errors gave Marquette a 17-9 advantage. After calling a timeout, the Mountaineers put up three straight points with a kill from junior outside hitter Anke de Jong and errors by the Golden Eagles. Marquette then went on a 6-2 run to end the first set 25-14.
Down a set, WVU surged out to a 12-5 lead by capitalizing on Marquette errors. After a Golden Eagle timeout, Marquette began to slowly close the gap and ultimately tied the game at 20-20. The Mountaineers used kills from freshman middle blocker Evyn McCoy and senior outside hitter Kylie Armbruster to take the lead 22-20. The Golden Eagles would not let the set slip away and proceeded to go on a 5-1 run to take the second set and a two set lead in the match.
Marquette used the momentum from the first two sets to take the third set and the match.
McCoy and senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky led the Mountaineers with seven kills each while senior setter Kari Post recorded 23 assists and senior libero Serinna Russo chipped in 16 digs.
WVU will hit the road next weekend for its last road trip of the season as the team travels to Connecticut and St. John’s. The team will play the Huskies on Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. and the Red Storm on Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.
