MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following two season-opening wins on the road, the West Virginia rifle team moved up one spot to No. 2 in the first College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll of the regular season.
The CRCA will issue new rankings every week this season, with team rankings based on season-high scores.
Kentucky, which has not yet opened its season, retained its No. 1 ranking. WVU moved up in this week’s poll based on its nation-best 4667 score, shot in its victory at Nebraska on Oct. 16.
“It was good to get off to a strong start this season,” says coach Jon Hammond. “I think the scores will reflect the equality there is going to be around the nation this year, which could make this one of the toughest, most interesting seasons we have had.”
TCU, ranked No. 2 in the preseason poll, dropped to No. 3 (4663). Nevada is ranked No. 4 (4662), while UTEP is No. 5 (4651).
Army moved up one spot to No. 6 (4649), while Alaska-Fairbanks (4631), Murray State (4628), Ole Miss (4625) and Ohio State (4622) round out the Top 10.
The Mountaineers (2-0, 1-0 GARC) open their home season against the Black Knights, a Great American Rifle Conference foe, on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the WVU Rifle Range, at 8 a.m.
