MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team plays its annual Gold-Blue World Series beginning this afternoon, Friday, Oct. 14, at Hawley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4:15 p.m.
The Mountaineers will play games two and three on Sunday, Oct. 16, and Monday, Oct. 17, with first pitches scheduled for 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
“We are really looking forward to this year’s series,” says 18-year Mountaineer coach Greg Van Zant. “The Gold-Blue series is always a highlight of our fall season, and with so many new players on our roster this fall, this year's games are even more important than usual for us from an experience and evaluation perspective.”
Redshirt senior pitcher Eric Hinkle and redshirt junior outfielder Chris Rasky will captain the Gold and Blue teams, respectively. The Gold team is coached by third year assistant coach Jake Weghorst, while recruiting coordinator and assistant coach Pat Sherald will mentor the Blue squad.
The Gold team is led offensively by junior centerfielder Brady Wilson, who is hitting .388 so far this fall. The speedy right-handed hitter leads the Mountaineers this fall with 11 stolen bases in 19 intrasquad games. On the mound, the Gold will start sophomore right-handed pitcher Corey Walter in game one.
Redshirt sophomore Matt Frazer leads the way for the Blue team. The left-handed hitting leftfielder from Alum Creek, W.Va., is leading the team with a .453 batting average in 17 games. Getting the nod in game one on the mound for the Blue will be junior right-hander Dan Dierdorff. Dierdorff, a transfer from Frederick Community College, has registered a 4.05 earned-run average in seven fall appearances to date.
All three of the series’ games are free and open to the public.
