MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s tennis team saw gains in its play during its second day of competition at the Wake Forest Invitational in Wake Forest, N.C., Saturday.
“Everyone competed much better today,” said coach Tina Samara.
Sophomores Melis Tanik and Mary Chupa built on their strong doubles play from Friday and scored an 8-2 win over Davidson’s Stephanie Synn and Nisha Crouser in Flight A Doubles play.
“Melis and Mary had one of their best performances this morning,” Samara said. “They cut down on their mistakes and got a taste of what high level doubles is like.”
Tanik, who is playing in the Flight A Singles draw, was also impressive in singles action, as she scored a victory over Helen Cunningham of Richmond, 6-3, 6-2.
“Melis had a great win over Richmond’s No. 1 player,” Samara said. “She has really improved her ability to compete throughout a whole match.”
Chupa fell to the Viviana Stavreva of Elon in Flight D Singles competition, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
After competing well on Friday in the Flight B Doubles draw, freshman Ikttesh Chahal and senior Catie Wickline lost another hard fought match to Wake Forest’s Brigita Bercyte and Karen Forman, 9-8 (2).
Wickline fell in Flight E Singles competition to Katherine Dicconson of Davidson, 6-4, 6-3.
The Wake Forest Invitational will wrap up tomorrow with competition starting at 9 a.m.
