MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will continue its season with a trip to Pitt to take on the Panthers on Saturday, Jan. 8, at 11 a.m.
Both the WVU men (2-2) and women (2-4) are coming off losses to UC Santa Barbara during the team’s training trip in California.
“We are excited to race against Pitt tomorrow and continue this great rivalry,” coach Vic Riggs said. “We are hoping to build off of last week’s training trip and continue to get faster in preparation for the BIG EAST Championships. This meet always brings the best out of both teams and it’s going to take our best to beat them.”
The men are led by junior Taylor Camp, who has the best BIG EAST season time in the 100 fly and third-best in the 200 fly. Sophomore Jared Goldthorpe holds the top BIG EAST spot in the 200 back and freshman Tim Squires is in fifth place in the 100 free.
Sophomore Rachael Burnett is in the top five in the 500 free (third), 200 fly (fifth) and 400 IM (second). Sophomore Mandie Nugent leads the BIG EAST in the 200 fly and has the fifth-best 500 free time. Senior Lyn Ann Nelson has the third-lowest 200 free time in the conference.
Pitt’s women’s team currently has a 4-1 record, while the men are 2-3. The men are led by Andrzej Dubiel who is among the nation’s leader in the 50 free. The women are led by Elena Spak, Meghann McGoldrick, Joanna Budzis and Kristen McMullan.
Last season in Morgantown, both squads defeated Pitt with Burnett and senior George Farquhar each scoring three wins.
