Women's Tennis: WVU Topped by James Madison

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team fell, 6-1, in today’s match against James Madison at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
“We got off to a slow start and paid for it the rest of the match,” says coach Tina Samara. “If we would have won a couple of those first sets, this would’ve been a very different match.”
Freshman Mary Chupa captured the lone win for the Mountaineers in the No. 4 singles spot, winning 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Melis Tanik (No. 1), sophomore Emily Mathis (No. 2) and junior Veronica Cardenas (No. 3) also stood out in the singles competition, but were topped in three close matches, two of which were in the third set.
The Dukes swept the doubles competition, winning 6-8 in the first two spots. Senior Ashley Pilsbury and sophomore Liv Pettersson put up a tough fight in the No. 3 spot, but fell 7-8(5) in a tiebreaker.
“There were things that we did better on some of the courts,” adds Samara. “The bottom line is that we need to get tougher and find a way to win.”
The Mountaineers will continue action at the Greenbrier Resort, tomorrow, in a 9 a.m., match against the Lady Flames.
