MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After two weeks away, the West Virginia University gymnastics team returns to the WVU Coliseum and plays host to East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foes, Pitt and Rutgers, on Saturday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m.
The tri-meet is the Mountaineers’ (2-2, 0-1 EAGL) first at home since defeating Michigan State, 194.0-192.575, on Jan. 14.
WVU returns to Morgantown after losing twice in five days last week on the road. Ranked No. 18, the Mountaineers fell at No. 5 Georgia, 196.725-192.125, on Jan. 17, and at No. 10 NC State, 194.55-194.475, on Jan. 21.
“We’re glad to be back home in front of our fans,” says 37-year coach Linda Burdette-Good. “It’s was a long week and a long first part of the season, but I think we navigated the meets well and came out in good shape.”
The Mountaineers own winning series records over Pitt (49-12-2) and Rutgers (48-0). Despite last week’s loss to the Wolfpack, WVU owns a 251-63-3 (.797) all-time record against current EAGL opponents and has not lost more than two league meets, including championship action, in a season since 2007.
“It’s always competitive against these two teams,” Burdette-Good says. “We have a good rivalry going against the Panthers, and Rutgers always puts up a fight. Tomorrow’s meet will help us see where we stand against an even greater pool of league competition. I hope everyone that came out for our last home meet will come back and show their support.”
Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer, the three time defending EAGL Rookie of the Week, paces the Mountaineers in three events. The Cornwall, N.Y., native is nationally ranked No. 23 on floor (9.838) and No. 41 on vault (9.825); her vault average is tops in the EAGL. Additionally, she owns a team-best 9.756 beam average.
Senior Amy Bieski also is nationally ranked on floor and checks in at No. 34 (9.831). The Nanticoke, Pa., native moved up two spots to No. 12 on the WVU all-time career points list with a 39.1 showing at NCSU, pushing her career point total to 1,629.775. She now needs 7.175 points to pass TeShawne Jackson for 11th place and 51.15 points to crack the Top 10.
RU (7-3, 1-3 EAGL) enters tomorrow evening’s meet after scoring a season-best 192.05 in its quad-meet home win over North Carolina, Penn and Brown on Jan. 22. Sophomore transfer Danielle D’Elia, the reigning EAGL Specialist of the Week, leads the Scarlet Knights on bars with a 9.767 average.
The Panthers (2-1, 0-1 EAGL) take to the road for the first time this season and are coming off a 193.75-192.65 home loss to New Hampshire on Jan. 23. Despite the defeat, Pitt tallied season highs on vault (48.775) and beam (48.375).
