MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 24, 2011) – The West Virginia University tennis team defeated Morehead State, 4-0, in today’s match in Morehead, Ky.
“It’s always nice to get a win,” says coach Tina Samara. “Hopefully, this will help the girls to loosen up a bit as a team. It may not have been the same caliber team as it was yesterday, but we did do well.”
The Mountaineers started the day by sweeping the doubles competition. Junior Veronica Cardenas and freshman Mary Chupa came out with an 8-1 victory over Morehead’s No. 1 pair of Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney.
Sophomore Emily Mathis and freshman Melis Tanik continued the streak winning 8-6 in the No. 2 spot, while the No. 3 pair of senior Ashley Pilsbury and sophomore Liv Pettersson came out on top in a close match against the Eagles’ Alix Young and Alexandra Rydberg.
The Mountaineers then continued to maintain their lead in the singles competition.
“In the singles, we came out ready to go and we can see that from some of the scores,” adds Samara. “I think there were some really good adjustments made on a few of the courts, playing outside of their comfort zone, but knowing that it’s things they need to do to get better.”
Tanik started the singles off strong with a 7-5, 6-2 win in the No. 1 spot, while Mathis (No. 2) defeated Rydberg 6-3, 6-1 and Cardenas (No. 3) followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Antero.
Chupa and Pilsbury also had a good showing in the No. 4 and 5 spots, as each was up 6-2 in their respective matches before clinching the win.
The Mountaineers will continue action on Jan. 29-30, as they play host to James Madison and Liberty at the Greenbrier Hotel and Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
