Men's Basketball: WVU 21st in AP Poll

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia made its debut in the Associated Press men’s basketball poll this week at No. 21 following Sunday’s 68-64 victory over now 14th-ranked Purdue.
The Purdue win was West Virginia’s second over a ranked team in the last eight days, the Mountaineers also knocking off then-13th-ranked Georgetown in Washington, D.C., 65-59 on Jan. 8. West Virginia has won four straight over DePaul, Georgetown, Providence and Purdue after losing two in a row against St. John’s and Marquette to begin Big East play.
West Virginia is one of nine Big East teams in this week’s AP poll. The Mountaineers are one spot outside the ESPN/USA Today top 25 coaches’ poll, six poll points behind Arizona.
WVU (12-4) returns to action on Wednesday night in Charleston when it faces Marshall (12-5) in the Capital Classic at the Charleston Civic Center. Tipoff is 8 p.m. and the game will be televised statewide on the Capital Classic Network.
ESPN3.com will also carry the game.
Briefly: West Virginia forward John Flowers was named to the Big East’s weekly honor roll after scoring a career-high 24 points against Providence last Thursday and following that up with 15 points on Sunday against Purdue … the Mountaineers made a return to the rankings for the first time since spending the entire 2009-10 campaign in the polls … this marks the 27th week West Virginia has been in the rankings since Bob Huggins’ return to Morgantown … West Virginia is ninth in the RPI this week, according to CollegeRPI.com, following its win over Purdue … the Mountaineers are 14th in this week’s Sagarin rankings with the No. 1 strength of schedule rating in the country.
