Gymnastics: WVU Ranked No. 13

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a season-opening upset victory over No. 13 Missouri, the West Virginia University gymnastics team enters the GymInfo Poll at No. 13.
The Mountaineers defeated the Tigers, 194.5-191.575, on Jan. 7, at the Cancun Classic, in Cancun, Mexico.
WVU (1-0) was not ranked in the 2011 GymInfo Coaches Preseason Poll. Poll rankings are determined by high score for the first week of the season. For the first month of the season, average team scores determine the rankings, then regional qualifying scores (RQS) are used.
In addition to the overall team ranking, the Mountaineers also are ranked No. 3 on beam (49.05), No. 11 on vault (48.925) and No. 20 on floor (48.6).
After winning the event in Cancun, freshman Hope Sloanhoffer is ranked No. 1 in the nation on vault (9.925). The Cornwall, N.Y., native was the first WVU rookie to score at least 9.9 points in any event in two seasons. Additionally, she is the first Mountaineer to stick a 9.925 vault since Chelsi Tabor earned the score against North Carolina in 2008.
Sloanhoffer earned three national rankings this week, as she also is ranked No. 20 on floor (9.85) and No. 21 on beam (9.825).
Senior Amy Bieski also earned three national rankings this week. The Nanticoke, Pa., native is ranked No. 6 on beam (9.85), No. 20 on floor (9.85) and No. 22 in all-around (39.025).
Junior Tina Maloney is ranked No. 6 on vault (9.875), while sophomore Kaylyn Millick is No. 21 on beam (9.825).
Regionally, the Mountaineers are ranked No. 3 overall in the southeast behind No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Georgia; the Gators and Gym Dogs are nationally ranked No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. WVU also is ranked No. 2 on beam, No. 3 on vault and floor, and No. 4 on bars (47.925).
Individually, Maloney follows Sloanhoffer at No. 3 on vault, while senior Emily Kerwin is ranked No. 11 (9.8) and Bieski is No. 13 (9.775).
Bieski ranks No. 2 on beam, while Sloanhoffer and Millick are No. 5, sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe is No. 7 (9.8) and Maloney is No. 13 (9.75). Bieski and Sloanhoffer also rank No. 5 on floor; Bieski also is No. 5 in the all-around.
Additionally, Goldschrafe is ranked No. 11 on floor (9.775), while senior Alysha Pretzello is No. 13 on bars (9.675).
The Mountaineers are tied with New Hampshire for the No. 1 ranking in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League. WVU also is ranked No. 1 on vault and beam, No. 2 on floor and No. 4 on bars.

Friday is a “Dollar Day”, with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for the purchase of just one dollar.
