MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men’s and women’s swimming and diving team will continue its preseason with the annual WVU Swimming & Diving Celebration starting on Friday, Oct. 1, with a 6 p.m. banquet at Lakeview Golf Resort & Spa.
The banquet will feature special guest Kevin Gilson, the former WVU swimming and diving head coach, while Bob Huggins of the men’s basketball team will be the guest speaker.
“We are very excited and appreciative for Coach Gilson to join us on this special night. He was the backbone of the team for 30 years and helped develop the program into what it is today,” coach Vic Riggs said. “We are thrilled to be able to honor him on this special night.
“Coach Huggins is one of the top coaches in the country and we are very excited that he will be the guest speaker at this year’s event. We have been very fortunate to have great speakers in the past such as Don Nehlen and we hope to continue that tradition.”
Gilson coached the Mountaineers for 30 seasons and finished with an overall record of 290-159-2. Six former swimmers were also awarded honorable mention All-America status under Gilson and he had 27 NCAA qualifiers in his tenure at WVU.
A Morgantown, W.Va., native, Huggins led the Mountaineers to the Final Four last year. Huggins is currently fourth most winningest active coach with 670 wins.
The weekend will continue with the Gold-Blue Meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning, followed by a golf outing at Lakeview starting at 2 p.m.
The team will open the regular season on Oct. 16 against Penn State in the WVU Natatorium. The meet will commence at noon.
