Women's Soccer: Meet Alex Sawicki
September 28, 2010 10:33 AM | General
Each week throughout the 2010 season, MSNsportsNET.com will get to know the six freshmen on the West Virginia women’s soccer team. We conclude series with defender Alex Sawicki.
What attracted you to play soccer at West Virginia University?
I was very intrigued by the level of competition that this team plays at. WVU has an outstanding program here and I wanted to better myself by playing with people who are better than me, and would challenge me in different ways.
Who has had the biggest influence on your soccer career?
Definitely my dad. He has sacrificed a lot to make sure that I’m where I’m supposed to be. He has definitely been my best and loudest cheerleader. He is the one who always picks my head up if I'm having a bad day on the field.
Of the teams not on your schedule, whom would you like to play most?
I actually really wanted to play University of Virginia because I have a couple friends who play varsity sports there, but we’re already playing them. So after Virginia, I would have to go with Vanderbilt. My cousin goes there and we always joke about whose school is better so it would just add to the competition to see whose women’s soccer team is better.
How did you spend your summer?
I went to the Bahamas for a week, went down the jersey shore, hung out with friends, worked out, spent a lot of time with family and then spent two weeks on a couch because of my MCL.
Tell us why Mountaineer fans should turn out to see the women’s soccer team play this year.
We’re a great team that is loaded with talent. There is always a great atmosphere at home games and the more fans we have the better, because it just adds to that atmosphere and excitement.
