MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team plays host to USF on Sunday, Sept. 26, in its BIG EAST Conference home opener. Kickoff at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m.
“South Florida is a talented team that brings some international flair to the field,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “They have some fast, technical players in the midfield and up top. They’ve had some good results to this point and it should be a good challenge for us.”
WVU is coming off a 2-1 loss at Marquette on Sept. 23 where midfielder Bri Rodriguez scored her third goal of the season. Forwards Megan Mischler and Blake Miller each earned an assist on the goal.
South Florida is coming off a 2-0 victory against Pitt on Sept. 23 in Tampa. The Bulls are led by fourth-year coach Denise Schilte-Brown and return the bulk of its team from a year ago that won the program’s first BIG EAST tournament match and posted five regulars season conference victories.
The trio of forwards Chelsea Klotz, Noelle Pineiro and Venicia Reid have accounted for 17 of USF’s 22 goals this season. The Bulls entered the week ranked 24th nationally in scoring offense and Klotz ranked seventh in total goals scored.
Sophomore Taylor Patterson, an all-BIG EAST third-team choice last fall, returns to anchor the midfield position and will also see time up top. She netted her second goal of the season versus Pitt.
Defensively, USF has a new goalkeeper for the first time in three years following the graduation of standout Mallori Lofton-Malachi. Nicole McClure, a transfer from Hawaii who sat out last season, has started all nine matches this year, allowing only seven goals in over 810 minutes of action.
The Mountaineers are 4-1 all-time against the Bulls, including a 2-0 mark at Dick Dlesk. WVU won the first four meetings, all by 2-0 scores, before USF won a 2-1 match last season in Tampa.
