MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team will travel to West Point, N.Y. on Sept. 24-26, to compete in Army’s Eastern Championships under its new head coach, Tina Samara.
“It’s unfair for me to judge how the girls will perform this weekend because I’ve only seen them practice briefly, but it all comes down to how they compete,” says Samara. “I think we have some really good talent and some promise, but it’s way too soon to make a judgment.”
The tournament will feature four singles brackets (A, B, C and D) and two doubles brackets (A and B). Newly paired junior Catie Wickline and freshman Anna Rodionova will be the Mountaineers’ lone doubles pair for the weekend.
Senior Ashley Pilsbury (flight ‘A’), junior Veronica Cardenas (flight ‘B’), sophomore Emily Mathis (flight ‘C’) and freshman Melis Tanik (flight ‘D‘) will be representing WVU in the singles competition.
“I’ll being doing a lot more observing than coaching this weekend, but if there’s someone I see struggling or lacking somewhere, I’m going to step in and help,” adds Samara. “I plan to mainly focus on what each girl’s tendencies are and where they could improve.”
Play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, and will continue through Sunday afternoon. Due to a large number of teams, the tournament will conclude late each night and will result in recaps being posted the following mornings.
“I’m excited that we have some fall tournaments to get comfortable with each other,“ Samara concludes. “I’m really looking forward to getting to know the girls and becoming a part of the team.”
