FULLERTON, Calif. – Four Mountaineers posted double-figure kills, as the West Virginia University volleyball team defeated Liberty this afternoon at the Fullerton Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
“This was a great way for us to start the tournament,” coach Jill Kramer says. “The girls came out focused and aggressive this afternoon after a long day of travel, which was important.”
The Mountaineers improved to 9-3 as they defeated the Flames (7-4) in a 3-1 (25-17, 26-28, 25-21, 25-19) match.
Leading WVU was senior Abby Norman who posted 12 kills on a .476 hitting average, and junior Serinna Russo who recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 19 digs.
Senior Lauren Evans and junior Michelle Kopecky also played well with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
A team effort led the Mountaineers in set one as they posted a commanding performance over the Flames, with a .406 team hitting percentage. Norman led with five kills on a .833 hitting clip, after she posted one to end the set.
With senior Karyl Bacon taking several swings, Liberty returned to take the lead first in set one. Down, 9-15, Kopecky stepped up with a kill, while Evans followed with two of her own, to start a 5-0 Mountaineer run. Still down 20-22, Norman once again posted two big kills to tie the set at 22. However, despite its best efforts, WVU fell after a kill from Loren Thomas and a Liberty block.
Set three was all about defense for the Mountaineers as they posted four team blocks to help win the set. Tied at three, Evans and Kopecky assisted on one of those blocks that fueled a 5-0 WVU run. The Mountaineers went on to win the set as Russo recorded her ninth kill of the match.
WVU came out strong in set four, as it fought hard to win the set. Up, 15-13, a dig from Bonnie West off a hard attempt from Liberty’s Bacon, gave the Mountaineers some momentum to win the set and the match.
West also posted 20 digs in the match and is now only seven away from breaking the school record, while junior setter Kari Post recorded 44 assists.
The Mountaineers are set to return to action with a match against Cal State Fullerton at 10 p.m. EST.
