MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck and the BIG EAST have announced the 2010-11 women’s basketball schedule.
Returning all five starters from last year’s team that recorded a school-record 29 wins and made an NCAA Tournament Second Round appearance, the Mountaineers look to continue the momentum into this year’s schedule. In addition to 14 non-conference contests, WVU will play 30 total games, including 16 at home.
“Coach Carey and his team experienced much success last season and our fans will have more excitement ahead with this season’s schedule,” Luck says.
The Mountaineers will face Fairmont State in an exhibition game Nov. 6, and will open the regular season with three straight home games beginning Nov. 12 against Loyola Maryland.
West Virginia will travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands to kick off the road portion of its schedule with a three-game tournament in the Paradise Jam, Nov. 25-27. WVU opens the tournament with TCU on Nov. 25, will face Virginia on day two and will wrap up the tournament against Iowa State.
“I think this year’s schedule is a very competitive one,” women’s basketball coach Mike Carey says. “We will be tested early on in our non-conference schedule and at the Paradise Jam tournament. The BIG EAST will be tough as ever and after last year’s success at home, we hope our fans are excited to come see some solid basketball this season.”
Three consecutive non-conference matchups in the Coliseum will take place the first week of December before BIG EAST competition opens at Villanova Dec. 9. Following the conference opener, West Virginia will play four non-conference games, two home and two on the road, before returning to BIG EAST action.
Conference games fill the remainder of the 2010-11 schedule, with the exception of the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic against Marshall held in Charleston, Jan. 19. WVU will face defending BIG EAST and NCAA Champions Connecticut in Morgantown, Feb. 8.
In addition to Connecticut, BIG EAST teams visiting Morgantown will be Cincinnati, Syracuse, USF, Providence, Pitt, Notre Dame and St. John’s.
Of those teams, Pitt is the only opponent West Virginia will play a home-and-home series with.
The team opens the 2010-11 practice schedule Tuesday, Oct. 5.
