Women’s Soccer: Pitt Match Postponed

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia’s women’s soccer match with Pitt Thursday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, played for 47 minutes, has been postponed due to heavy lightning.
The contest, per BIG EAST Conference policy, will likely be rescheduled for the Monday or Tuesday prior to the BIG EAST Championship quarterfinals, if necessary. The quarterfinals are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 31.
“We definitely wanted to get this game in tonight,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “The field started to drain a little bit, but obviously the lightning and rain wouldn’t let up. Unfortunately, you can’t control the weather.”
The Mountaineers and Panthers played to a scoreless first half, struggling to string together much offense while adjusting to the wet surface. Each team attempted four shots in the opening 45 minutes, while WVU held a 4-1 corner kick advantage.
The lone shot on-goal of the match came in the 43rd minute on a header from Mountaineer defender Erica Henderson. Defender Bry McCarthy served a corner kick inside the box where Henderson’s header from six yards out was deflected over the goal by Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart.
Pitt midfielder Christina Nicassio took the only shot of the second half, a long range attempt that drifted wide of the goal. It was the final shot before play was suspended.
A crowd of 696 fans braved the elements before the match was postponed.
West Virginia, 3-3-0 on the season, returns to action by playing host to fifth-ranked Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. The contest is also “Dollar Day” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for purchase for just one dollar. Sunday’s match is also Alumni Weekend, honoring former Mountaineers who have donned the Old Gold and Blue and will be the celebration of US Youth Soccer Month.
The WVU men’s soccer team welcomes James Madison following the women’s contest on Sunday. A free WVU student shuttle bus service will be available from the Mountainlair and the Brooke/Braxton Towers loop from noon to 1 p.m. and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday. Return service to both locations will also be available at the conclusion of each game.
Fans unable to attend the match can follow the Mountaineers at home all season long via Live Stats and a free WebStream at MSNsportsNET.com.
