MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia men’s soccer team will be in action twice this weekend hosting the BIG EAST Partner Weekend at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers will take on Cal State Fullerton on Friday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m., followed by a match with James Madison on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 3:30 p.m.
Pitt will be the fourth member of the weekend and will take on James Madison on Friday at 5 p.m., and then take on Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Mountaineers (2-2) are coming off a 2-1 win over Old Dominion last Sunday, taking second place in the Stihl Soccer Classic. West Virginia’s previous four opponents combine for impressive 13-2 record, with the only two losses coming to the Mountaineers.
Cal State Fullerton (0-2-2) will face West Virginia for the first time ever. The Titans were last in action last weekend losing to San Jose State, 1-0, and Washington, 3-1. Nick Posthuma has Cal State Fullerton’s only two goals of the season. Goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon has played all 400 minutes and has allowed five goals, while making 15 saves.
“If you watched us play a year ago, you would’ve said, ‘they’re a pretty good team they just can’t score’. People say the same thing about Fullerton,” coach Marlon LeBlanc said. “They have good players and Bob Ammann is a good coach, they just haven’t found their stride yet and I just hope they wait one more game until they do. There was a California team that came in last year and beat us on our home field and we have to be cognizant of that.”
James Madison (4-0) is one of the highest-scoring offenses in the country, out-scoring their opponents, 15-3. The Dukes are led by C.J. Sapong who leads the nation in scoring with six goals and 15 points. The undefeated start has been James Madison’s best start since 2004 and through games of Sept. 12, there are only 18 unbeaten Division I schools. Goalkeeper Ken Manahan has played 361 minutes in four games and has two goals against and nine saves.
“They’re scoring goals by the boat load and have one of the best players in America in C.J. Sapong,” LeBlanc said. “We have two very tough opponents this weekend that have both proven in history to be very good. One is looking to notch their first win, so they’re coming in with a chip on their shoulder and the other one is undefeated and flying high.”
Sunday’s match will has been designated as a “Dollar Day” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Cola products available for purchase for just one dollar. The match will also will be the celebration of US Youth Soccer Month. The women will also be hosting Virginia at 1 p.m. as part of a doubleheader.
A free WVU student shuttle bus service will be available from the Mountainlair and the Brooke/Braxton Towers loop from noon to 1 p.m. and from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Sunday. Return service to both locations will also be available at the conclusion of each game.
