MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior Nicco Campriani finished fifth in the 50m men’s rifle 3 position at the 50th International Shooting Sport Federation Championship, today, at the 1972 Olympic Shooting Range of Munich in Munich, Germany.
Campriani, a Florence native shooting for the Italian team, reached the finals for the second time in five days via his combined score of 1271.8. The two-time National Rifle Association first team All-American shot 1173 (394 prone, 390 standing, 389 kneeling) in the qualification relay and 98.8 in the finals.
Today’s result follows Campriani’s first place, 1180 (395 prone, 395 standing, 390 kneeling) showing in yesterday’s elimination relay. He is currently ranked No. 9 in the world in the event.
A 2008 Olympian at the Beijing Summer Games, Campriani has seen his success skyrocket over the course of this championship. He won the 10m men’s air rifle on July 31 and earned an Olympic quota place, signifying him as the first qualified athlete among all sport events for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Additionally, he finished 27th in the 50m men’s rifle prone on Aug. 2.
Fifth-year Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond competed alongside Campriani today and finished 39th overall with a score of 1165 (398 prone, 377 standing, 390 kneeling). Hammond, an Aberdeen, Scotland, native, and a member of the Great Britain team, advanced after shooting 1156 (399 prone, 370 standing, 387 kneeling) in the elimination relay.
Hammond also finished 29th overall in the 50m men’s rifle prone.
“Nicco had a fantastic showing at the world championship and simply reinforced his status as one of the best shooters in the world,” said Hammond. “To be a world champion as such a young age is an incredible achievement, and it will truly be a privilege to have him at WVU for another season.”
Today’s competition concludes Campriani and Hammond’s participation in the championship.
