Swimming: Squires Sets Record; Others Compete

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the West Virginia University swimming and diving team gave successful performances with their respective club teams in closing out summer competition.
Freshmen Tim Squires, Joseph AbuRahma and Bryan Brown spent last week at the 2010 YMCA National Long Course Swimming Championships in College Park, Md., while freshman Richard Pokorny competed at the Buffalo 2010 Empire Summer Games in Rochester, N.Y.
“We would like to congratulate all four on their accomplishments,” coach Vic Riggs says. “We are looking forward to Tim, Joseph, Bryan and Richard continuing to get better when they join the program this fall.”
Squires had two impressive first-place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free at the YMCA championships, which were held in a 50 meter pool. The Buckhannon, W.Va., native, set a new national record with his time of 23.15 in the 50 free. Squires finished the 100 free in a time of 51.68.
AbuRahma, a native of Charleston, W.Va., finished eighth in the 50 fly (26.29), 27th in the 100 fly (59.88), 44th in the 200 fly (2:21.48) and 56th in the 50 free (25.73).
Brown, a Dover, Del., native, took 55th in the 50 free (25.72) and 89th in the 100 back (1:05.32).
At the Empire Games, Pokorny finished with an impressive score of 497.95 for first place on the 3-meter board. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Pokorny also took second on the 1-meter with a score of 478.70.
