MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University player quotes from Aug. 24.
Slot Receiver Jock Sanders
About the conclusion of camp
I’m feeling good and I’m happy with camp being over. I can’t wait for everyone to get at it. We practice with the same intensity, but now it’s just more game planning for your opponents. We’ve started watching film like crazy already and game planning.
On Coastal Carolina
We see how they like to play cover three and second personnel check the cover two, and we’re starting our two-play system now so that should help us when they check for their second personnel.
On their two-play system
It’s a run and pass each time. (Quarterback) Geno (Smith) has been so smart because he’s been able to get to the line of scrimmage and check off when the overhang or linebacker is there, then check it into the second play. He’s been in the film room like crazy, as much as the coaches, and that’s given him the ability to do that two-play call system.
Running back Tavon Austin
On his role this season
I’m playing the wide receiver now and coach told me that I played well this summer. I’m confident that I’m doing a good job. Switching positions is just helping me get better, and if my chance ever comes to play in the NFL, I’ll be able to play a lot of positions.
On his ability to score in his position
Any time I touch a ball, I have that God-given ability to think like I’m back at running back. When I have to reverse, my mind just clicks back into being a running back so that I can make a play.
Adjusting to playing slot and wide receiver
Wide receiver is the hardest because you’ve got a lot of DB’s out there that are the same speed as you and cut just like you. Some days I get them and other days they get me, so I think we’re good all the way around.
On racing Jock Sanders and Noel Devine
The farthest we’ve ever raced was 15 yards. Jock won one, and Noel and I won a couple, so we each had a chance to win. So if I’m over here, Jock’s over there and Noel’s in the backfield, the defense isn’t going to know who to defend.
Defensive lineman Julian Miller
On Coastal Carolina
It’s always good to start focusing on another team, rather than just playing against each other in preseason camp. Camp helps us get out all of the kinks and get our technique down, but now we get to work on plays and scheme against another team. It’s kind of exciting from a player’s standpoint because this means our season is getting started and we’re ready to start hitting other jerseys.
Over the summer, some of us have been watching film on our own and breaking it down, but we’ve been breaking it down a lot more going into the last two weeks. We’re still in the beginning process, but I know we’ll be pushed a lot more next week.
Comparing this year to past years
I think we’re more focused this year. This is basically another week of camp, even though school started. We don’t have a game this week so it’s really just more time to prepare and get better at things that we still need to work on.
Defensive end Bruce Irvin
On starting the season
I’m anxious to start the season. I’m growing into Morgantown and getting used to everything, so I’m feeling good about it. Playing here is a lot different than junior college because the players are stronger and much more physical, but it’s fun. Football is fun, period.
On his position
(The coaches) just moved me recently to defensive end because that’s my natural position. I took some reps at linebacker, but as of now, they’re keeping me at defensive end because that’s more natural to me. My biggest asset is my speed, so I don’t want to put on too much weight, which separates me from being a normal defensive end.
On making a sack
It is a good feeling to get the quarterback, but I have never had 60,000 fans cheering for me, so it’s really going to be special now.
