MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Mountaineer Athletic Club presents the Summer Blitz with Director of Athletics Oliver Luck, set for Aug. 18-20.
The in-state tour will kick off the upcoming athletic year and serve as a welcoming party for Luck back to West Virginia. An Academic All-American, Luck quarterbacked the Mountaineers from 1978-81, and graduated from WVU magna cum laude in 1982. Hired on June 10, he assumed his role as director on July 1.
Joining Luck on select stops throughout the Blitz will be several Mountaineer coaches, including Mike Carey (women’s basketball), Linda Burdette-Good (gymnastics), Greg Van Zant (baseball), Vic Riggs (swimming & divining), Marc Walters (women’s tennis) and Jimmy King (women’s rowing), as well as former student-athletes Reed Williams, Darris Nichols, Meg Bulger and Mehgan Morris.
Additionally, representatives from the Mountaineer Athletic Club will be present at each stop and will provide MAC membership information for fans, including ways to help Mountaineer student-athletes by funding scholarships and capital projects at WVU, a self-supporting intercollegiate athletic department. Also, ticket information for the 2010 WVU football season will also be available. Each one-hour stop will include give-a-ways and is free and open to the public.
“The Mountaineer Athletic Club is excited to bring some of our greatest ambassadors from WVU to cities across West Virginia,” says assistant athletic director for athletic development Niles Eggleston. “WVU has the greatest fans in the country, as well as some of the best student-athletes in the nation. We are excited to bring the two together, to give fans the opportunity to meet WVU coaches and former Mountaineer student-athletes, and to provide the opportunity for fans to learn more about helping the Mountaineers by joining the Mountaineer Athletic Club.”
The tour opens on Aug. 18 at The Court Restaurant in New Martinsville at 11:30 a.m. Also included in the first day are stops at JP Henry’s in Parkersburg at 2:30 p.m., and the Civic Center in Charleston at 5:30 p.m.
The excursion will pick-up at Tamarack in Beckley, on Aug. 19, at 9 a.m. From there, the group will move on to the Bluefield Elks Lodge in Bluefield at 11:30 a.m., the Chief Logan Convention Center in Logan at 2 p.m., and Northside Automotive in Summersville at 5 p.m.
The tour’s last day includes stops at Western Steer in Elkins, on Aug. 20, at 10 a.m., and at Jackson Square Parking Pavilion in Clarksburg at noon.
